BuddyPress allows to turn your WordPress MU into a social network platform. Is basically a set of WordPress specific plugins developed by Andy Peatling that has one core plugin and a collection of other independent plugins.

It allows you to build a space for an individual profile that has a series of feeds across an entire WPMu installation that is an aggregation of their activity throughout the community, including posts, comments, images uploaded, groups joined, status updates, etc.

Anybody can write posts that will be displayed under local categories. You can pick and choose which features you’d like and if you deactivate one plugin won’t cause any errors with the rest.

Now that a social layer can be seamlessly added to this publishing framework I think the interest in WPMu will become far greater.
